More About Surgery

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce breast volume, correct ptosis (sagging) and asymmetry, and create a lighter, more proportional breast shape.

Excessively large breasts can put a strain on the back, neck, and shoulders, complicate sports activities, make finding well-fitting bras and clothing difficult, and cause skin irritation under the breasts – in short, significantly reduce your quality of life.

Breast Reduction without implants

At Yurchenko Team in Cyprus, surgeries are always planned individually for each patient: the surgeon evaluates tissue volume, the degree of sagging, skin condition, nipple-areola complex placement, and the patient’s expectations. The goal of the procedure is not just to reduce the breasts, but to make them look natural, lifted, and in perfect harmony with your figure.

Indications

Breast reduction may be recommended if you experience:

  • physical discomfort and a feeling of heaviness;
  • back, neck, or shoulder pain;
  • constant, painful indentations from bra straps;
  • skin irritation beneath the breasts;
  • difficulty with physical activity or finding clothes;
  • pronounced ptosis (sagging);
  • asymmetry;
  • loss of shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or age-related changes.

Important! Excessively large breast volume can be a natural genetic trait or the result of hormonal imbalances, such as gigantomastia.

If a hormonal imbalance is suspected, we refer the patient for an additional endocrinologist consultation and, if necessary, a course of treatment. In these cases, surgery is planned only after the condition is fully stabilized; otherwise, the breasts may continue to grow, making the surgical outcome less predictable.

Preparation for Surgery

Preparation begins with an in-person consultation with a plastic surgeon. The doctor discusses your concerns, expectations, the desired size and shape of your “new” breasts, potential reduction volume, incision type, the need for implants, and the specifics of the surgery and recovery.

During the examination, the surgeon assesses the degree of ptosis, asymmetry, tissue condition, areola position, and the volume of glandular and fatty tissue. Based on this data, the breast reduction method is selected:

  • an anchor lift with implants using Denis Yurchenko’s proprietary “70/30” method – to create the most striking and full cleavage,
  • or an anchor lift without implants.

Before your visit, it is helpful to have an idea of your expected result (you can bring reference photos), but the final surgical plan is determined only after the examination.

Next, the patient undergoes a standard comprehensive pre-operative screening: complete blood count and urinalysis, blood chemistry, blood glucose, coagulation profile, blood type and Rh factor, testing for HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis. An ECG, breast ultrasound, and consultations with a gynecologist and general practitioner are also performed. If indicated, additional examinations may be required, including an endocrinologist consultation.

An anesthesiologist consultation is scheduled once you are medically cleared for surgery. During this appointment, you must inform the doctor about all medications and supplements you take regularly – some may need to be temporarily paused.

Which Implants to Choose?

Breast reduction can be performed with or without implants. Sometimes the surgeon works solely with the patient’s own tissues via an anchor lift: removing excess volume, correcting ptosis, repositioning the nipple-areola complex, and shaping a new, lighter breast form.

However, it is practically impossible to create a striking, full cleavage using only natural tissues: the fullness, in this case, will generally only last until the post-operative swelling subsides (i.e., around 6 months).

Therefore, for the most aesthetic breast reduction, the majority of Yurchenko Team patients choose an anchor lift with implants using Denis Yurchenko’s proprietary “70/30” method.

Implants in breast reduction are used to:

  • provide additional shape stability;
  • fill the upper pole of the breast;
  • create projection;
  • reduce the risk of recurrent sagging.

The decision is made on an individual basis, taking into account anatomy, tissue quality, the degree of ptosis, and the desired outcome.

Yurchenko Team uses anatomical (teardrop) or round implants from leading manufacturers: Polytech, Motiva, Eurosilicone, and Nagor.

For complex reduction mammaplasties with a lift, Polytech Replicon polyurethane implants may be used to help stabilize the breast shape. Lightweight Polytech B-Lite implants can also be considered: they weigh approximately 30% less than traditional implants, which is crucial when requiring a volume over 350 ml or when there is a high risk of recurrent ptosis.

The quality of the implants is backed by a lifetime integrity warranty, and after surgery, the patient receives official warranty documentation from the manufacturer.

Breast Reduction: Surgical Steps

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes an average of 1.5–3 hours. The surgeon removes excess tissue, reshapes the breast, repositions the nipple-areola complex, and forms a new contour. If the surgery involves implants, a pocket is also created for their placement.

For a maximally aesthetic breast reduction and a striking, full cleavage, an anchor lift with implants is performed using Denis Yurchenko’s proprietary “70/30” method.

The anchor incision pattern involves a cut around the areola, vertically downward, and along the inframammary fold. As they heal, the surgical scars gradually lighten and become barely noticeable.

Recovery After Breast Reduction

  • For the first 24 hours after surgery, the patient remains under professional medical supervision in a comfortable private room. Swelling, moderate pain, a feeling of tightness, and restricted movement in the shoulder girdle are possible during the early recovery period.
  • Follow-up check-ups are typically held on days 3, 7, and 14: the doctor evaluates the condition of the breasts, treats the incisions, changes the dressings, and provides further recommendations.
  • During the first week, sleeping in a semi-reclined position is recommended, and then on your back. Sleeping on your side or stomach is restricted for a period determined by your surgeon. Alcohol must be strictly avoided while taking prescribed antibiotics.
  • For the first 14 days, you must keep the incisions dry, avoid raising your arms above shoulder level, avoid straining the shoulder girdle, refrain from driving, and not schedule any flights without your doctor’s permission.

For patients planning their surgery in Limassol with subsequent flights or long trips, the recovery timeline must be coordinated with the surgeon in advance.

  • You must wear compression garments for the first month: they secure the breasts, reduce swelling, and support the healing tissues. One set of compression garments is included in the cost of the surgery.
  • Sports. You can gradually return to light workouts after about a month, but without any strain on the shoulder girdle and only with your doctor’s clearance. A full return to intense sports is usually possible after 4–6 months.

Potential Complications

Reduction mammaplasty can significantly improve your quality of life, but like any surgery, it carries some potential risks. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, hematoma, seroma, delayed healing, changes in nipple or skin sensitivity, noticeable or hypertrophic scarring, asymmetry, tissue necrosis, or the need for minor post-operative touch-ups.

Before the procedure, the surgeon discusses the expected outcome, possible risks, and recovery guidelines with the patient. Strictly following the doctor’s recommendations and attending scheduled check-ups helps make the recovery process as predictable and safe as possible.

If the surgery is performed with implants, additional risks regarding their placement, displacement, or capsular contracture formation are also monitored.

You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe pain, significant swelling, fever, redness, wound discharge, a sudden change in breast shape, or other unusual symptoms.

Advantages of Yurchenko Team

Yurchenko Team is an international team of plastic surgeons offering consultations and surgeries in Kyiv and Limassol. For patients in Cyprus, this is a highly convenient opportunity to undergo breast reduction and receive comprehensive care from doctors specializing specifically in aesthetic mammaplasty.

Each doctor on the team works within their specific area of expertise. There are over 70 types of procedures in plastic surgery, and all of them have their own nuances. This division of labor allows our surgeons to deepen their experience in specific areas and work not by a template, but by taking into account each patient’s individual anatomy and goals.

Breast surgery is one of Yurchenko Team’s core specialties. Denis Yurchenko, creator of the unique “70/30” Anchor Lift Method, has specialized in aesthetic mammaplasty for many years. Dmytro Mykylych is a mammologist, oncological surgeon, and reconstructive surgeon with extensive experience in breast reconstruction after oncological diseases and complex interventions.

The advantage of Yurchenko Team lies in combining the narrow specialization of our surgeons, aesthetic vision, personalized planning, and thorough post-operative care. Every patient receives an optimal, customized plan: from choosing the surgical technique and, if necessary, implants, to clear recommendations for recovery and long-term follow-up.

FAQ

At what age can I have mammoplasty?

Officially, from the age of 18. If you need to have it done earlier - and I've had such cases - you need a written permission from your parents and the presence of one of them.

For example, there was a 17-year-old girl who had a breast augmentation for her modelling career. And it worked - she won the Miss Denmark pageant and participated in the international Miss Universe pageant. There was a girl who had a congenital deformity corrected at the age of 17. There was a lot of stuff, but it's great when girls have the support of their parents.

Is mammoplasty and its results permanent?

Most likely not. Why is that?

Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. Your body is constantly changing during your life - without exaggeration, every day from birth to death. Therefore, you cannot expect the result of mammoplasty to be equally stable a year after surgery and 20 years after surgery.

Not only will your tissues change, but also your preferences. What you find attractive at 25 is likely to be very different from your preferences at 45.

The only thing that will remain stable over the years is the integrity of the implants. Almost all manufacturers of the new generation of implants provide a lifetime warranty on the integrity of their shell.

Why do I need to install drains during mammoplasty?

I always use drains during mammoplasty. This is a precautionary measure, drainage in mammoplasty is an additional insurance. Like a seat belt in a car. You may not need it, but if you suddenly get into an accident, the belt can save your life.

It's the same with drainage. You may not need it, but it is better to have it just in case.

Why is it needed? It removes the fluid that accumulates around the implant. If the fluid is not drained, it can lead to such complications as capsular contracture, seroma, poor fixation of the implant and, as a result, its rotation/displacement.

Drains are installed during surgery for the first 24 hours. When I am discharged, I remove them and then the rehabilitation takes place without them.

There are practically no traces of drains. And if there are, they are extremely inconspicuous.

Does your doctor stand for maximum safety?

Which implants are the best?

The answer is obvious - those that solve the problem at hand.

For example, some patients can choose between any implants certified in Ukraine - Polytech, Motiva, Eurosilicone, Mentor, Nagor, Arion, BellaGel, and others. Here I mean patients who plan to undergo breast augmentation with implants (augmentation mammoplasty).

But if the planned surgery includes various types of lifts, implant replacement, correction of contracture/seroma and other complications, then things are more complicated. It is necessary to choose the right size, shape and, most importantly, the implant coating, so that the result is long-term and I see you only for preventive examinations, letting you go on a ‘long free swim’ with your new breasts with a light heart.

And here I never offer an implant of choice, because the patient will never be able to make the right choice. Just imagine - each manufacturer has a range of sizes from 50 ml to 1000 ml; anatomical and round shapes; low, medium, high and extra-high projection; from 2 to 5 types of implant coating. And among all these options, you need to choose the only correct combination of implant factors, add to it the patient's tissue condition and surgical technique, and select the only correct option.

For example, a polyurethane implant is almost the only option for repeated lifts, the smoothest possible implant for correcting and preventing contractures, and so on. Therefore, in cases of complex corrections, I suggest that you entrust the choice of implant to your doctor. However, your doctor will be grateful if you look at examples of his or her work, make your own top list, and show the desired result before the consultation. For example, you can see my work in the Telegram channel (link in the pinned story).

Of course, you can also read forums - but keep in mind that all these theses about the ‘softest implant’ and ‘safest implant’ are the creativity of manufacturers' marketers. Therefore, it is better to spend time choosing a doctor whom we will trust 100%.
